Bass Rock Food

John Taylor, a traveller to Scotland in 1618, ate solan goose (gannet) from the Bass Rock. He commented:

" It is very good flesh, but it is eaten in the form we eat oysters, standing at a side-board, a little before dinner, unsanctified without grace: and after it is eaten, it must be well liquoured with two or three good rowses of sherrie or Canarie sacke. ''
