Castle Fraser

Castle Fraser

Photograph Castle Fraser Scotland

Castle Fraser, a 16th century castle, the grandest of the castles of Mar, near Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Photographic Print of Castle Fraser from Robert Harding.

Crow-stepped gables and turrets adorn grand Baronial tower house, built 1575. Stairway from smoking room leads to eerie Green Room, said to be haunted by ghost of a murdered princess. Round tower commands views of wooded parkland with walled formal garden.

This Scottish castle was built originally as a square tower and main block; in the 17th Century a round tower and extension were added to complete the "Z" form. The castle was originally built for the Laird Michael Fraser, and when he died building stopped temporarily. It was begun again in 1600 when the original plan was completed by the addition of the lower part of the main block and a round tower at the south-east corner. Between 1610 and 1620 another storey and garret was added to the Michael Tower and main block. At the same three extra storeys were added to the round tower and an armorial frontispiece carved in deep red freestone, carrying the royal arms above those of the Frasers.
