Perth Salmon

While it is clear that fish of various kinds must have figured fairly prominently in the traditional diet, what may not be so obvious is the scale on which fishing was carried on in some places. Thomas Pennant in his Tour in Scotland notes of the city of Perth in 1772: " It exports annually one hundred and fifty thousand pounds worth of linen, ten thousand of wheat and barley, and about the same in cured salmon. That fish is taken there in vast abundance; three thousand have been caught in one morning, weighing, one with another, sixteen pounds; the whole capture, forty-eight thousand pounds."
