Adam Skirving (1719-1803) - Songwriter

A tenant farmer in East Lothian, Scotland, he enjoyed a reputation among the farming community as an athlete and wit. His claim to fame rests on his composition of the song Hey, Johnnie Cope, which was written after the Jacobite victory at the Battle of Prestonpans in 1745. With its spirited tune and exaltation over the defeat of the government army under Sir John Cope, Skirving's song enjoyed, and has continued to enjoy, a wide popularity. His other song of note is Tranent Muir.
