The Society Of Friends Of Dunkeld Cathedral

Aims Of The Society

The Society of Friends seeks to improve the amenity of the Cathedral by providing furnishings and fittings and making donations towards the upkeep of the buildings; and to stimulate interest in its history and architecture by research, publicity and periodic lectures.

Dunkeld Cathedral

Fourteen centuries ago the Culdees (Friends of God)
established a missionary church in Dunkeld. The
present cathedral was built between the mid 13th and
14th centuries.Now, many centuries later,another group
of “Friends” seeks to ensure that this heritage of
christian witness is fully maintained. The Society of
Friends was formed in 1976 through the enthusiasm and
inspiration of our first Chairman, the late Mrs. Stewart
Stevens of Balnakeilly, Pitlochry.

The Cathedral grounds,Nave and Tower are cared for
by Historic Scotland as an ancient monument of nationa]
importance. The Choir and adjoining Chapter House are
used and maintained by the local congregation as the
Parish Church and community museum.

Museum and Archives

The Society of Friends has furnished the Cathedral
Chapter House as a small Museum with Archives and a
Reading Room on the floor above. The archives, which
contain a comprehensive collection of books and records
relating to the cathedral and social. history of the community, are open to public inspection on the 2nd Monday of the month from 10.00a.m. till noon, or at other times by appointment.

We welcome all forms of memorabilia relating to
Dunkeld and Birnam, either for retention or on long term
loan. The museum is a registered member of the Museums
and Galleries Commission which ensures qualified
documentation and preservation of all items in its care.
