James Stewart Of The Glens

The illegitimate son of the Laird of Ardshiel and
half-brother of the leader of the Clan Stewart of Appin in the 1745 Jacobite rebellion. He was evicted from his farm at Glenduror by Colin Campbell of Glenure, following the forfeiture of the Stewart and Cameron lands to the Campbells. When Glenure was murdered in 1752 Stewart and his foster-brother Alan Breck Stewart were wrongly accused of the crime and James was hanged at Ballachulish on 8th November 1752. The Appin murder case and both James of the Glens and Alan Breck feature in Kidnapped and Catriona (1893) by Robert louis Stevenson.
