Janet Hamilton (1795- 1873) - Poet

She was born on 12 October 1795 at Carshill in Lanarkshire, Scotland, the daughter of a shoemaker. Although her childhood was hard and poverty-stricken, and she married at 13 and raised a large family, she received a rudimentary education; through her reading of Allan Ramsay and Robert Burns she was inspired to start writing songs and poems. The bulk of her work is derivative but there is an earthy humour in her comic songs, and her poems dealing with the harsh realities of life in a mining area, reflecting the poverty and hardships encountered by the community in which she lived, have a bitter edge. Her reminiscences also paint a vivid picture of her life and times. In her later years she became blind and she died on 27 October 1873 at Langloan near the place where she was born.
