John Elder

Marine engineer and shipbuilder, born Glasgow, son of David Elder, Robert Napier’s works manager at
Lancefield. He developed, and patented in 1853, the compound marine engine, going into partnership with Charles Randolph to build these engines, whose economy extended the useful range of steamships. When Randolph retired in 1868 Elder formed the company of John Elder and Co, and built the Fairfield Shipyard in Govan. He died at the height of his powers in the following year
