John Ewen (1741-1821) - Songwriter

He was a native of Montrose but most of his life was spent in Aberdeen, where he kept a hardware shop. Through his marriage to the daughter of a wealthy Aberdeen manufacturer he prospered, and on his death he was found to have left money to various charities in Aberdeen and Montrose. A long-drawn-out court case, brought by his daughters who challenged his will, ended with his wishes being rescinded in 1830. Ewen was the author of the fishing song O weel may the boatie row.
