John Oswald - Hero

Sir John Oswald (1771-1840) was born at Dunnikier, educated in France, and spent 53 years fighting for king and country. He fought all over Europe and in the Americas, often leading his troops in hand to hand combat, and rising to the rank of General, yet managed to die peacefully at home in Kirkcaldy.

He bought his first commission, as was the norm at the time, but quickly proved his abilities, even taking a drop in rank at one point to ensure a combat posting. His exemplary service in the West Indies, the Netherlands, Malta, Italy, Egypt, the Adriatic and finally the Peninsular War demonstrated his keen tactical and strategic under- standing and his personal courage.

Highly commended for his war service, he received three gold medals, although a subsequent attempt to move into politics was less successful. He became a Deputy
Lieutenant of Fife. He was advanced to full general and made Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath and the Order of St Michael and St George.
