(c. 1005—1057)

King of Scots

Not the great villain portrayed by Shakespeare, Macbeth was no worse and probably better than many medieval kings and Scotland was relatively stable under his government. He went to Rome on pilgrimage in 1050 and is said to have ‘scattered alms like seed corn’. He is buried on the island of Iona.
