Maria Riddell (1772-1808) - Friend of Robert Burns

She was married to Walter Riddell, the younger brother of Robert Riddell of Friar's Carse. She enjoyed a close relationship with Burns to whom she wrote several letters and sent her poems for criticism, but their friendship was interrupted when Burns was banished from her sister-in-law's house, Friar's Carse, following a drunken revel in 1793. Although Burns wrote several satires on Maria and her husband, he again became friendly with her in 1795. After his death Maria Riddell wrote a generous Memoir Concerning Burns in the Dumfries Weekly Journal in August 1796.
