Michael Nairn - Manufacturer

Michael Nairn was the founder of Scotland's first floorcloth factory. The success of his business, established in Kirkcaldy in 1847, led to the rapid expansion of the floor covering industry in the town, and its growth worldwide.

Aged 40, Nairn decided to move into floorcloth, opening a new factory in Pathhead in 1847. He spent over 10 years establishing the firm, however he died before the business enjoyed great success.

Michael Nairn's son, Sir Michael Barker Nairn went on to guide the company through successful expansion for a further 40 years after his father's death. The factory began producing award-winning linoleum on a large scale, exporting the product across the world.
