Richard Cameron - Covenanter

Richard Cameron was one of the most noble of the Covenanters known as The Lion of the Covenant.

Born in Falkland, Fife, Scotland, around 1648, he was the son of a prosperous merchant. At first he may have had little sympathy with Covenanting principles but he began attending conventicles and became a Covenanter and later was licensed as a preacher of the Gospel.

While he was visiting Holland the Covenanters took up arms in Scotland. When Cameron returned in 1680 he rode into the market-place of Sanquhar in Dumfriesshire and fixed a poster to the Town Cross. The paper was the famous Declaration of Sanquhar; and in it Cameron disowned Charles Stuart and declared war against him.
This was treason and a price of 5000 marks was set upon his head. For a month he evaded capture, but he and his friends were outnumbered by large forces at Airds
Moss in Ayrshire. Cameron and his brother were slain.
