Robert Crombie Saunders - Poet

He was born on 23 April 1914 in Glasgow, Scotland, and was educated at the University of Glasgow, since when he has spent much of his life working as a schoolmaster. Most of his literary work has been published in magazines and he has written on many aspects of Scotland's life and culture; among the magazines he has edited are Scottish Art and Letters (1944-8) and Forward (1951-6). In 1944 he edited a selection of the poems of Hugh MacDiarmid, a publication that did much to resurrect MacDiarmid's reputation during World War II. His own poem about the effects of the clearances, which has been anthologized frequently, is a reminder of the care and attention devoted to language and metre by this poet, who has published all too little of his work in book form over the years.
