Robert Sym (1752—1835) - Lawyer

He was born on 29th February 1752 in Glasgow, Scotland. After an education at the University of Glasgow, he served his legal apprenticeship with an uncle before being admitted a writer To The Signet in 1775. His nephew was John Wilson and to that family relationship Sym owes his place in literary history as the character 'Timothy Tickler' in the Noctes Ambrosiane published each month in Blackwood's Magazine between 1822 and 1835. A tall, thin man, who delighted in taking long walks whatever the state of the weather, Sym was a popular, though slightly eccentric figure in the Edinburgh of his day.
