Thomas Carstairs Latto - Poet

He was born on 1st December 1818 at Kingsbarns in
Fife, Scotland, the son of the village schoolmaster. He worked as a lawyer's clerk in Edinburgh and as a
commission merchant in Glasgow before emigrating to the United States of America in 1858. There he founded the Scottish American Journal and worked as a publisher's editor before retiring in 1871 to live in Brooklyn where he ran an estate agency business. Latto was a regular   contributor to Blackwood's Magazine, but his verse rarely rose above the trivial and the sentimental. He remains best known for his lament for days long past, 'When we were at the schule'.

Works: The Minister's Kailyard (1845); Memorials of Auld Lang Syne (1892).
