Walter Kennedy (1460-1508) - Poet

He was the third son of Lord Kennedy of Dunure and through his mother he was related to Robert III of Scotland. His uncle, James, was Bishop of Dunkeld and St Andrews and the founder of St Salvator's College, St Andrews. He was educated at the University of Glasgow and through his royal connections he became Depute-Bailie of Carrick. Although very little is known about his life and career, some echoes can be heard in The Flyting of Dunbar and Kennedy, the great poetic battle of words with his contemporary William Dunbar. Both Dunbar and Sir David Lyndsay make generous mention of Kennedy's prowess as a poet but very little remains of that output.
