William Cruickshank Scotland Epitaph

William Cruickshank (died 1795) was appointed Rector of the High School, Canongate, Edinburgh in 1770. Later he became the Latin master at Edinburgh High School. Burns lodged with Cruickshank and his family at 2 St James's Square from the autumn of 1787 to 1788:

Honest Will to Heaven is gane,
And mony shall lament him;
His faults they a' in Latin lay,
In English nane e'er kent them.
