William Maxwell (1760-1834) - Physician

He was a friend of Robert Burns, whom he met in Dumfries in 1794 on his return from France, where he had been a supporter of the Revolutionary government. He attended Burns in his last illness but diagnosed as gout
the rheumatic fever or endocarditis from which the poet suffered. Maxwell became one of the trustees of the fund created to care for the family after Burns's death.
