William Nicol (1744-1797) - Scholar

He was a master at the High School Of Edinburgh, Scotland, but his fiery temper led to his dismissal after a quarrel with the rector, Dr Alexander Adam, in 1795. He accompanied Robert Burns on his Highland tour of 1787, but his vanity was piqued when Burns was invited to dine alone with the Duke of Gordon at Castle Gordon. Burns was forced into leaving with his friend Nicol and losing the opportunity of meeting Robert Graham of Fintry, a fellow guest and Commissioner of Excise who could have furthered Burns's career. Burns wrote Elegy on Willie Nicol's Mare for Nicol.
